Game Review: Random Heroes by Ravenous Games

This is a classic side scrolling shooter for IOS and Flash Player. It works okay on the browser via Flash but the touch screen is where this gem really shines.

The plot is absolutely simple, a couple of emo kids kicked over a tombstone, opening a portal to an alternate world filled with zombies,  monsters and for some reason robots (you know, that old story). You spend your time battling these creatures and the occasional boss until you reach the end of the game.
The thing that keeps you going is the new guns and costumes you can purchase to make things a LOT more fun and a bit easier.
Purchases are made with coins that you collect throughout the game and by killing enemies, naturally coins can also be purchased with real money via an in game transaction. Unlike many free games, I didn’t feel they were pushing me to spend any real money, I was able to buy the best stuff after only a few days of playing.

THE VERDICT!

GRAPHICS – PIXELS! I LOVE PIXELS!!!

CONTROLS – Great controls on IOS, very responsive. Flash controls are annoying and leave quite a bit to be desired in terms of responsiveness. In order to drop down to a lower platform you must hold jump, which makes you jump up first and then drop down if you keep holding it, which is kind of annoying.

LIKED – Fun costumes that come with very nice stat bonuses! Loads of weapons, each more deadly than the last! I liked that items that increase your stats like “Damage”, “Agility” or “Health” have a very noticeable effect that you can feel immediately.

DISLIKED – Too short, beat it in a week. Kept playing for a bit afterwards in order to buy a few more guns and costumes but ultimately got bored.

BOTTOM LINE –  It’s a fun waste of time that’s easy to play in short bursts throughout the day. Once you beat it you’ll never play it again but luckily Ravenous Games has quite a few other fun looking games to try like Gravity Duck (Review coming soon!)
